Cable ties are those flexible fastening straps that bend back and forth, like those puff dancers that hang around drive-thru oil changes and car washes.Today, they’re usually made of nylon or plastic and are used to help organize and secure bundles of cables.Around their 1958 concept, they were originally cut from stainless steel and invented for wiring harnesses on airplanes.Today, designers at Dawn Studio in South Korea have restored cable ties to their original form to use stainless steel metal strips as fasteners for new interior furniture systems.
To build Dawn’s cable furniture, Dawn Studio’s creatives basically took unused cable ties that bundled together various items (like delivery boxes or cable bundles) and used them to hold the pieces of furniture in place. Together. For example, the system’s featured side table is made by threading stainless steel cable ties through laser-cut slits in the tabletop and its legs, creating a simple yet sturdy table. The furniture system is easy to assemble and other furniture variants can be built, such as umbrella stands and lighting fixtures.Following a similar construction process as the side table, the construction of the lighting fixtures for Dawn Cable Furniture is slightly more complicated. To accommodate sockets and different sized bulbs, the metal plates that form each shade are adjusted to promote optimal lighting. In addition to these more basic pieces of furniture, Dawn Cable furniture also features a clock made of attached stainless steel cable ties that use nuts and bolts to form the center dial of the clock.Using Dawn’s cable furniture, users can create monochromatic vanity spaces or moody nighttime reading nooks.
The evolution of product design often seems to reflect the changing needs of its users, but when it comes to disposable items like cable ties, durability is often abandoned in favor of an overall lower cost production process.Recognizing the untapped potential of stainless steel cable ties, the team at Dawn Studio sought to transform the product’s one-off identity into a permanent fastener that holds the entire furniture system together.
