TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA. President Joko Widodo, or Joko Widodo, has said he will file an appeal with the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in October 2022. Jokowi introduced a ban so that the country could get added value from the export of processed nickel.
“Even if we lose in the WTO, our losses are judged by the EU for nickel, we will lose in the WTO, no matter if we lose. I pass this on to the minister, the message,” Jokowi said at the opening of the Public Investment Coordinating Meeting held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at The Ritz-Carlton, Central Jakarta.
Having lost the case, Widodo announced that he would extend the ban on the export of minerals to agricultural products. The next commodity that Jokowi will ban exports is bauxite and coffee.
“Try not to export as raw materials. We’ve been exporting for hundreds of years, stop. Find investors, invest in them so that there is added value,” Jokowi said.
Jokowi said that the ban on the export of raw materials increases the state’s revenues. Jokowi said that in the nickel sector alone, the country typically earns IDR 20 trillion in revenue from commodity exports, but after processing, the value of the income rises to IDR 300 trillion.
Thus, Jokowi has reported a trade surplus for 29 consecutive months. In fact, Jokowi claimed that the balance of trade has been negative so far.
“If another country sues, then yes, it is the other country’s right to sue because yes (they) interfered,” Jokowi said. “If we are simply sued, we are afraid, we will take a step back, we are not going to do this, we are not going to be a developed country.”
With regard to nickel, the European Union (EU) is concerned about the ban on the export of metallic minerals, as it could undermine the growth of stainless steel production in EU member states.
Nickel is often called the father of industry because the processing of this metal produces derivative products for many industries that people need, such as spoons, batteries, mobile phones and cars.
Nickel is expected to become one of the industries of the future as the demand for metal minerals for the production of batteries and electric vehicles increases.
Indonesia controls over 20% of all world nickel exports. Indonesia is also the second largest exporter of nickel for the EU country’s steel industry.
According to the Geology Department of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the estimated nickel ore reserves are 3.74 billion wet metric tons (wmt) and the proven reserves are 1.49 billion wet metric tons, bringing the total nickel ore reserves in Indonesia to 5. 24 billion tons. billion wet metric tons. .
